Medical, Clinical and Innovation Strategies

Carl Ehmann, MD is a dermatologist, retinoid expert, and seasoned executive with a distinguished track record in driving global research for both pharmaceutical and consumer products companies.

Before becoming a consultant, Carl held a range of R&D leadership positions in a 25+ year industry career. Among these, Carl served as Head of Global R&D and as a member of the board of Reckitt & Colman (before its acquisition by Benckiser NV), where he was responsible for its pharmaceutical and consumer products businesses. Earlier, he served as Executive Vice President and Head of Global Research and Development for Johnson & Johnson Consumer Products Worldwide. In this position, he built the company's formulation and regulatory capabilities, leading to introduction of a range of efficacious consumer cosmetic and OTC products employing GRAS/GRAE ingredients and supported by break-through claims.

Prior to joining the consumer products world, Carl was Vice President, Pharmaceutical R&D/Dermatology for Bristol-Myers Squibb and a member of BMS's Operating Committee while simultaneously serving as Vice President of Research & Development for Westwood Pharmaceuticals. At BMS, Carl innovated in the development of high dose lactic acid-based products for ichthyosis and, at lower over-the-counter strength, for moisturization. Before BMS, Carl was Director of Clinical Research/Dermatology at Hoffman-LaRoche, where he led clinical development of Accutane® for cystic acne as well as the preclinical and clinical development for the first approved retinoid for psoriasis.

Throughout his career, Carl has also held adjunct clinical teaching positions at a number of leading medical schools, including serving as a Clinical Associate Professor at Bowman Gray (Wake Forest University), the University of Pennsylvania, UMDNJ, and SUNY-Buffalo. Earlier in his career, he served as an assistant clinical professor at NYU and the University of Minnesota. Currently, beyond his consulting role, Carl serves on a range of for profit and non-profit boards.
